Early Buddhism in stone
Hidden in a wooded ravine near Gondal lie the Khambhalida caves, a group of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves dating to around the 3rd–4th century CE — among the most important early Buddhist remains in Saurashtra. Carved into the soft rock, the caves include a central chaitya (prayer hall) with a stupa, flanked by viharas (monks’ cells).
Their great treasure is the pair of large, beautifully carved figures guarding the chaitya entrance — the Bodhisattvas Padmapani and Vajrapani, rare and remarkable survivals of early Buddhist sculpture in Gujarat. Set amid greenery with a seasonal stream nearby, the site is peaceful, little-visited and deeply evocative of the era when Buddhism flourished across western India.
For lovers of history and quiet, offbeat heritage, Khambhalida is a rewarding discovery — a place where the traces of a whole religious age survive in soft stone, far from the crowds.
The guardians deserve their fame: Padmapani stands with his lotus amid attendant figures, Vajrapani opposite, both carved life-large in a soft, weathered limestone that gives them an almost molten tenderness — imagery in the Mahayana current that was moving through western India’s cave monasteries in those centuries, and almost nowhere else surviving in Gujarat at this quality. The chaitya behind them keeps its apse and stupa; the flanking viharas show the cells and benches of the resident community that once watched the trade roads below.
Khambhalida lies about 20 kilometres from Gondal and 70 from Rajkot, signed off the Bhayavadar road; entry is free and the site guard, when present, cheerfully unlocks what needs unlocking. Pair it with Gondal’s palaces and the Navlakha’s carving for a day that spans sixteen centuries of Saurashtra patronage; the monsoon fills the ravine’s stream and greenery, and October to March gives the settled weather. Wear shoes for rough ground and take the site’s silence as its principal exhibit.
