NATURE · WETLAND · BIRDSGujarat's great bird lake — Nal Sarovar, a vast shallow wetland west of Ahmedabad where flamingos, pelicans and tens of thousands of migratory birds gather each winter.
Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, spread across a huge shallow lake and surrounding wetlands about 60 km west of Ahmedabad, is one of the largest and most important wetland bird sanctuaries in India. Declared a sanctuary in 1969 and recognised as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, its expanse of shallow water, reedbeds and small islands becomes, each winter, a magnet for an astonishing variety of birds — flamingos, pelicans, ducks, geese, waders, cranes and many more, arriving in tens of thousands from across Asia.
The classic way to experience Nal Sarovar is by flat-bottomed boat at dawn, gliding among the birds as the sun rises over the water. Tranquil, vast and teeming with life, it is a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers and a beautiful natural counterpoint to the city nearby. (A protected Ramsar sanctuary; boat rides and entry by ticket.)
