Sayaji Baug — also called Kamati Baug — is one of the largest and most cherished public gardens in western India, laid out in 1879 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III for the people of Baroda. Spread along the Vishwamitri river, its expansive lawns and avenues of old trees are home to a remarkable cluster of attractions.

The garden condenses Sayajirao’s whole idea of kingship: the reforming Gaekwad who gave Baroda compulsory education, libraries and a university also gave it 113 acres of public green with knowledge attractions folded in — a museum whose European paintings and Indian sculpture would honour a capital, a planetarium ahead of its time, and gates open to every citizen. More than a century on the baug still works exactly as designed: joggers at dawn, school crocodiles at the museum by ten, families at the toy train and zoo through the afternoon.
For the visitor the practical order is simple: enter free, pay small tickets inside for the Baroda Museum (its Egyptian mummy remains the schoolchild favourite), the zoo and the rides, and give the whole complex a half day. The garden sits mid-city near the railway station, pairing naturally with the Laxmi Vilas Palace and the university’s Kala Bhavan for Vadodara’s grand Gaekwad circuit; November to February is the green, kind season.
