Porbandar is an old Arabian Sea port with centuries of seafaring — its sailors traded across to Africa and the Gulf, and in legend the town of Sudamapuri was home to Sudama, Krishna’s boyhood friend.
An ancient port on the Arabian Sea
Long before it was famous as Gandhi’s birthplace, Porbandar was a busy port town on the Arabian Sea. Its seafaring merchants and sailors carried goods across the water to the ports of East Africa and the Persian Gulf, and the town’s prosperity was built on this maritime trade. In legend Porbandar is Sudamapuri, the home of Sudama — the poor Brahmin who was Lord Krishna’s childhood friend — and the Sudama temple recalls that story.
The trade shaped everything about the town. Porbandar’s shipwrights built ocean-going dhows on the creek; its merchants kept houses in Zanzibar and Muscat, and the wealth came home as the cream-coloured limestone mansions — the town quarries a stone so fine it was exported for buildings abroad — that still line the old quarters. The Sudama connection completes the picture: the Sudama Mandir at the town’s heart honours Krishna’s friend whose story is the model of humble devotion, making Porbandar a pilgrimage stop as well as a port.
Trace the heritage on foot: the harbour and its boatyards at dawn, the old town’s carved facades and ghats, Sudama Mandir, and then the Gandhi circuit — Kirti Mandir beside the family haveli — that the port’s prosperity ultimately produced, since the Gandhis served as diwans to the town’s rulers. October to March is the comfortable season, and the town works best as the middle stop on the Dwarka–Somnath coastal run.

Porbandar’s history is a maritime one. For centuries its dhows sailed the monsoon winds to trade cotton, cloth and other goods with distant shores, and families here kept close links with the coasts of Africa and Arabia.
