ABOUT

The colossus, lit by night

Once darkness falls over Kevadia, the Statue of Unity hosts a nightly laser light-and-sound show. Beams and projected imagery play across the 182-metre statue and its plaza, set to a narrated soundtrack that recounts the life and mission of Sardar Patel and the story of India’s unification. It is a dramatic, family-friendly finale to a day at the monument, best watched from the viewing plaza below.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

Patel's story in light

Night at the Statue of Unity.
The statue

The statue's 182-metre bronze surface doubles as a projection screen, and the show is built around that scale rather than around a conventional stage.

Dusk

It starts after dark, once the day's visitors have cleared the viewing gallery and the plaza has filled.

The tale

The narration follows Sardar Patel's life and the integration of 562 princely states into the Indian Union after 1947.

Finale

Lasers, projected imagery and a scored soundtrack run together for roughly half an hour.

WHY EXPERIENCE IT

Why come

🔦

Laser beams

Projection across the full height of the statue is what makes the show work — nothing else in India offers a canvas this size.

🎼

Narration

The narration is the substance: Patel's role in unifying the princely states, told in sequence.

🌈

Projected light

Light plays over the bronze cladding and the stone plaza together, so the whole monument is in the show.

🌙

Night spectacle

It is timed as the closing item of a Kevadia day, after the gallery and museum have shut.

👨‍👩‍👧

Family show

It is pitched at families and works without much prior knowledge of the history.

🗽

The statue

Even before the show the statue is floodlit, and the approach after dark is worth the walk on its own.

THE CELEBRATION

How to experience it

01

Tour by day

See the statue and viewing gallery by day first; the show assumes you have already been up.

02

Stay for dusk

Stay on after sunset rather than leaving with the afternoon crowd — the show is the reason to.

03

Take your place

Sit centrally on the viewing plaza. The projection is designed to be read straight on.

04

Follow the tale

Follow the narration; it is a compact account of how 562 princely states became one country.

05

Watch the beams

Bring a tripod if you want night frames — handheld shots of a lit statue at this distance rarely work.

06

Check the timing

Check the day's timing at the ticket counter. There is one show a night and it shifts with the season.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

A monument that speaks at night

Light-and-sound shows have become a favourite way to bring India’s monuments alive after dark, and few surfaces are as dramatic as the Statue of Unity. The nightly show turns the day’s sightseeing into storytelling, using the statue itself to dramatise the life of the man it honours. Combined with Kevadia’s gardens and river cruise, it makes for a full evening out.
