ABOUT

The Bhil celebration of Holi

For the Bhil communities of Dahod, Holi is the greatest festival of the year — and it is celebrated not in a single day but as a days-long season of colour, dance, costume and fairs that transforms the tribal countryside. Around the full moon of Phalguna (March), Bhil villagers across Dahod gather for Holi in their most vivid traditional finery — bright clothes, ornaments, feathers and face-paint. Bonfires (Holika) are lit, and the days that follow erupt into tribal fairs and the swirling Gher and other folk dances, performed to the beat of drums and the cry of folk instruments. The festival is a time of joy, courtship, community gathering and the release of the spring — an intoxicating, deeply rooted celebration quite distinct from the urban Holi of colours. Like the famous Kawant fair in neighbouring Chhota Udaipur, Dahod’s tribal Holi is a spectacular and authentic expression of Adivasi culture, drawing the communities together in their thousands. For the visitor, tribal Holi in Dahod is an unforgettable, colourful immersion in Bhil culture — best experienced in the days around Holi, with respect and sensitivity. (The Bhil tribal Holi of Dahod; days of dance, costume and fairs around Holi (March); experience respectfully.)

The days after the full moon belong to the gol gadheda and bhagoria-style fairs that rotate through Dahod’s market towns — each town its appointed day, so the festival travels the district for a week or more. The fairs mix everything at once: dance circles and swings, silver and bow-and-arrow stalls, sugar-cane presses, and the courtship traditions the season is famous for, when young people meet, choose and sometimes elope with the community’s ritual blessing — a custom anthropologists have written about for a century and the communities simply live.

Travellers should ask locally which town holds its mela on which day — Dahod, Jhalod, Limkheda and Garbada all take turns — and arrive by mid-morning as the crowds build. The colour throwing is enthusiastic; wear the clothes you can sacrifice, photograph people with a word first, and buy the silverwork from the makers’ own stalls. Dahod lies on the Vadodara–Ratlam line, making the season an easy add to a central Gujarat itinerary each March.
