Dayro & Bhajan

In Botad and across Saurashtra, the dayro and the bhajan-sandhya (evening of devotional song) are among the deepest-rooted forms of folk and spiritual culture — and in this saint-land of Gadhada and Salangpur, they carry particular resonance. A dayro is an evening (often all-night) gathering where a folk artist (lok-kalakar) holds an audience with a flowing blend of storytelling, devotional song (bhajan), humour, proverbs, and the rich oral literature (lok-sahitya) of Saurashtra — tales of saints, devotees and heroes. The bhajan tradition, especially strong in this region of Swaminarayan and Hindu devotion, fills temple courtyards and village squares with songs of the divine, accompanied by harmonium, tabla, manjira and the rapt response of the gathered. These gatherings are entertainment, devotion, oral history and community all at once.
