ABOUT THE PLACE

A dramatic plunge

Girmal Falls (Girmal Dhodh) is reckoned among the tallest waterfalls in Gujarat — a dramatic cascade where the river plunges off the edge of the Sahyadri plateau in the deep forests of the Dangs near Saputara.

Especially in and after the monsoon, when the river is in full spate, the falls thunder down the rock face in a long white plume framed by green hills, throwing up spray and mist.

Set in a remote, beautiful forest landscape, Girmal is one of the great natural sights of the Dangs, drawing waterfall-lovers and photographers willing to make the journey to this off-beat corner. The Dangs at their most dramatic.

HISTORY

The tallest fall on the Sahyadri edge

The white plume.

Sahyadri edge

The river reaches the western edge of the Sahyadri plateau and drops off it in a single fall — the same geology that produces the big waterfalls of the northern Western Ghats.

Tallest

At roughly 30 metres it is generally reckoned the tallest waterfall in Gujarat, a state with very few of any size.

Monsoon

It runs hardest from July through September, when monsoon runoff off the plateau turns the drop into a continuous white plume with spray reaching the viewpoints.

Remote

The setting is deep forest in the Dangs, Gujarat's most heavily wooded district and its only genuinely hilly one.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

🏆

Tallest fall

Around 30 metres, and the tallest fall in Gujarat — modest by Western Ghats standards but exceptional for this state.

💧

Dramatic plunge

The drop marks the edge of the Sahyadri plateau, where the tableland gives way to the coastal plain below.

🌧️

Monsoon spectacle

In full monsoon spate the noise carries well before you see it, and the spray soaks the viewpoints.

🌳

Deep forest

The Dangs are forested and thinly settled, and the approach roads run through teak and bamboo most of the way.

📷

White plume

The water falls as a single long plume rather than stepping down, which is what gives it its height.

🤫

Off-beat

It is a genuine detour — roughly 50 km from Saputara on narrow forest roads — and that keeps the crowds down midweek.

THINGS TO DO

How to spend an hour or two

01

See the falls

Come between July and October. Outside the monsoon window the fall reduces to a trickle and the trip is not worth it.

02

Visit in/after monsoon

Go on a weekday if you can — it is a popular Gujarati monsoon day-trip and the viewpoints fill at weekends.

03

View the plume

Stay behind the railings and off the wet rock at the lip. People are injured here most seasons.

04

Enjoy the forest

Allow the drive its due: about 50 km of narrow forest road from Saputara, slow going in the rain.

05

Photograph the cascade

Combine it with Saputara, Gira Falls and the Dangs' forest villages to make a full day of the district.

06

Take great care

Expect mist. In peak monsoon the fall is often wrapped in cloud, and the view comes and goes.
