About Banaskantha

Banaskantha — named for the Banas river — is North Gujarat’s great pilgrim land, rising from fertile plains to the wooded Aravalli foothills on the Rajasthan border. Its beating heart is Ambaji, one of India’s 51 Shakti Peeths, where millions climb to the Mother Goddess and to the original seat on Gabbar Hill.

Close by, the marble Kumbhariya Jain temples rival Dilwara in delicacy. Beyond the shrines lie the Balaram-Ambaji and Jessore sanctuaries — refuge of the sloth bear — the romantic Balaram Palace, and Nadabet, where travellers now witness the India–Pakistan border ceremony.

Travel Tips

Make the most of your Banaskantha trip.

1Avoid the fair crush — Bhadarvi Poonam (Aug–Sep) draws huge crowds — plan carefully.
2Take the Gabbar ropeway — it saves a steep climb to the original seat of the Goddess.
3Pair with Mount Abu — Rajasthan's hill station is just 45 km from Ambaji.
4Book Nadabet ahead — Seema Darshan slots and timings should be checked in advance.
5Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees at Ambaji and the Jain temples.
6Carry ID for the border — government photo ID is needed for the Nadabet visit.
7Best in winter — Oct–Mar offers the most comfortable weather for touring.
8Try Banas Dairy treats — sample the famously rich local ghee and milk sweets.
