A flame carried through centuries
Zoroastrians fleeing persecution in Persia landed on the Gujarat coast over a thousand years ago and were granted refuge by the local ruler at Sanjan.
The Iranshah Atash Behram was consecrated as the community's sacred fire — the highest of the three grades of consecrated Zoroastrian fire.
The fire was moved repeatedly over the centuries to keep it safe, sheltering in the Bahrot caves and several towns before reaching Udvada in the eighteenth century.
It has burned without interruption throughout, tended by priests in continuous succession — the oldest continuously burning fire of its kind in India.
