Pavagadh is the towering volcanic hill that dominates the Panchmahal landscape and forms the spiritual and scenic heart of the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising steeply above the plains — one of the oldest rock formations in western India — its slopes are layered with fortified gateways, tanks, ruined palaces and temples, both Hindu and Jain.
The climb leads to the summit where the revered Kalika Mata temple, one of Gujarat’s great Shakti shrines, draws streams of pilgrims. Reached by a long climb of stone steps or by ropeway, Pavagadh combines deep pilgrimage, dramatic views over the plains, and the romance of a great ruined hill-citadel.
It is the crown of the UNESCO park — a sacred heritage hill where you can take the ropeway or steps up and allow a half-day to take it all in.

Pavagadh is one of India's oldest rock formations — an ancient volcanic hill rising sheer above the Panchmahal plains.
Over the centuries the hill was fortified and held by many ruling powers, leaving it layered with walls, gateways and ruins.
Its slopes are dotted with temples, both Hindu and Jain, climbing toward the summit shrine.
Together with Champaner on the plains below, Pavagadh forms the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO World Heritage Site.
