ABOUT THE PLACE

Shiva on the sacred river

Shukleshwar Mahadev is the presiding Shiva lingam at Shuklatirth, an ancient pilgrimage spot on the Narmada near Bharuch where the sacred river flows broad and serene. The name ‘Shukleshwar’ (the White Lord) echoes the white or pale-toned Shiva lingam enshrined here, and the tirth is a place of penance, bathing and deep Shaiva devotion.

The temple draws pilgrims throughout the year, with festivals at Mahashivratri and the Narmada parikrama especially vivid. A great banyan tree by the water and the broad Narmada flowing past complete the atmospheric pilgrimage setting.

The White Lord of the holy river. A pilgrimage tirth, so modest dress is expected. An illustrated emblem is shown for this sacred place.
