Abode of Tembe Swami
Garudeshwar is one of the most revered pilgrimage spots on the banks of the Narmada — a small town that is a major centre of the Dattatreya tradition. It is especially associated with Param Pujya Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati, popularly known as Tembe Swami, a great 19th–20th-century saint of the Datta Sampraday who spent time here, and whose samadhi shrine draws devotees from across India.
The temple complex on the riverbank, the Datta shrine and the sacred Narmada ghats make Garudeshwar a place of deep devotion and serenity, especially during festivals and the Narmada Parikrama. A tranquil spiritual stop near Kevadia.

The town's association with Dattatreya worship is old, and its position on the Narmada made it a natural halt for ascetics and for pilgrims walking the river.
Tembe Swami, born in 1854, spent his life travelling on foot, writing extensively in Sanskrit on the Datta tradition and establishing its practice across Maharashtra and Gujarat.
He took samadhi at Garudeshwar in 1914, and the shrine raised over the site turned the town into the principal pilgrimage destination of the tradition.
It remains a fixed halt on the Narmada Parikrama, the circumambulation of the entire river that pilgrims still undertake on foot over several months.

Take darshan at the samadhi shrine, the centre of the town's religious life and of the wider Datta tradition.

Sit on the ghats for the evening aarti, when lamps are floated on the Narmada and the recitation carries over the water.
Sit by the ghats
Walk the riverfront. The Narmada is wide and slow here, and the walk is the reason many people stay a night rather than passing through.
Attend the aarti
Look out for parikrama pilgrims, identifiable by their staffs and bundles, walking the full length of the river over months.
Sense the devotion
Time a visit to Datta Jayanti in December, the tradition's principal festival, when the town is at its fullest.
Learn of Tembe Swami
Combine the visit with the Statue of Unity and Kevadia, about 20 km away, for a very different half of the same day.

Garudeshwar is a small pilgrimage town on the north bank of the Narmada in Narmada district, and a principal centre of the Datta Sampraday — the tradition devoted to Dattatreya, the composite form of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Its standing rests on Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati, known universally as Tembe Swami, the scholar-ascetic who did more than anyone to organise and spread the Datta tradition in western India in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and whose samadhi is here.
