ABOUT THE PLACE

Calm water below the dam

The Garudeshwar Weir is a barrage built across the Narmada downstream of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, near the pilgrimage town of Garudeshwar. By holding back the river, it creates a broad, calm stretch of water — part of the integrated development of the Narmada below the main dam — that has become a venue for water sports and a scenic riverside spot.

The still water, set against the wooded hills and the spiritual backdrop of Garudeshwar’s temples, makes it a pleasant, lesser-known addition to a Kevadia-area visit, combining engineering, recreation and the serenity of the sacred river.

A calm counterpoint to the great dam upstream. A weir and reservoir where water-sport access varies through the seasons.

HISTORY

Calm water held below the Narmada dam

Calm reservoir.

The weir belongs to the wider Narmada development below the Sardar Sarovar Dam, built to regulate flow and hold a steady level in the river downstream.

It crosses the Narmada near Garudeshwar, a few kilometres below the main dam and within easy reach of Kevadia.

By holding the water back it creates a broad, still reservoir — quite unlike the fast river the Narmada is above and below it.

That flat water made the site usable for boating and water sports, which is now the main reason visitors stop here.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

🌊

River barrage

The held-back water is calm and wide, in sharp contrast to the working river either side of the barrage.

🚣

Water sports

Boating and water-sport operations run from the reservoir, though availability changes with the season and the water level.

🏗️

Below the dam

Wooded hills rise on both banks, and the reservoir reflects them on still mornings.

⛰️

Wooded hills

Garudeshwar's temples and ghats are immediately upstream, so the engineering and the pilgrimage town sit side by side.

🛕

Garudeshwar

It is a short detour from Kevadia and the Statue of Unity, and far quieter than either.

🤫

Off-beat

Check before travelling — water-sport access depends on the level behind the weir and is not year-round.

THINGS TO DO

How to spend an hour or two

01

See the weir

Take in the reservoir from the bank, where the width of the held water is most obvious.

02

Enjoy the calm water

Ask about boating on the day. Operations run seasonally and depend on the level behind the barrage.

03

Try water sports

Walk up to Garudeshwar's ghats and temples, a few minutes away and a completely different atmosphere.

04

Pair with Garudeshwar

Come early, when the water is stillest and the hills reflect properly.

05

Sense the river

Pair it with Kevadia and the Statue of Unity to see both ends of the Narmada project in one day.

06

Photograph the reservoir

Keep off the barrage structure itself — it is working infrastructure, not a viewpoint.
