ABOUT THE PLACE

A jewel in white stone

The Nagina Masjid (‘jewel mosque’) is one of the most elegant of Champaner’s many Sultanate mosques, standing a little apart from the old city amid what were once gardens. Built in fine white stone, it is admired for its graceful proportions, delicate carving, slender minarets and the ornate cenotaph (tomb) that stands beside it on a raised plinth.

Within Champaner-Pavagadh’s UNESCO landscape, the Nagina Masjid is the connoisseur’s stop: a late-fifteenth-century mosque of Mahmud Begada’s capital, built in pale stone whose proportions earned it the name ‘jewel’, standing away from the main ruin cluster amid ground that was once laid as gardens. Its companion cenotaph is the real astonishment — a raised, roofless tomb pavilion whose every surface carries carving of a delicacy that has made it a textbook example of the Gujarat Sultanate style, where Hindu and Jain temple craftsmanship flows through Islamic forms.

Reaching it takes a short signed detour from the Jami Masjid area — many visitors never do, which is precisely its charm. Come with Archaeological Survey ticket in hand for the monument zone, give the cenotaph’s carving twenty unhurried minutes, and slot the mosque into a full Champaner day with the Jami and Kevada masjids and the Pavagadh hill climb. November to February is the walking season.

Like the other mosques of the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO park, it blends Islamic forms with local Hindu-Jain decorative motifs, and its quiet, garden setting makes it a serene and beautiful corner of the heritage site, well worth seeking out.
