Sahar ki Masjid (the ‘city mosque’), standing near the royal citadel of Champaner, is one of the most refined of the city’s many Sultanate mosques — thought to have served as the private mosque of the Sultan and his court. Built in the Gujarat Sultanate style, it has an elegant facade, finely carved entrances, slender minarets and a domed prayer hall — smaller but no less graceful than the great Jami Masjid.
Part of the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO ensemble, it reflects the wealth and artistry of Mahmud Begada’s capital, and is one of the highlights of a walk through the historic city. Royal elegance in stone. (An ASI/UNESCO monument; entry by ticket.)

Sahar ki Masjid stands beside the royal citadel at Champaner and is generally read as the court mosque — the Sultan's own, rather than the congregational Jami Masjid the city used.
It belongs to the building programme of Mahmud Begada, who took Pavagadh in 1484 and made Champaner his capital.
The carving is Gujarat Sultanate work at its most controlled: jaali screens, carved mihrabs and a facade whose ornament is dense but never crowded.
It is part of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 as the most complete surviving pre-Mughal Islamic city in India.

See the facade
Look at the facade first, and at how the ornament is organised around the central entrance rather than spread evenly.
Admire the minarets
Step inside for the mihrab and the domes over the prayer hall, where the stonework is at its finest.
Study the carving
Find the jaali screens and note the geometry — carved from single slabs, and typical of Gujarat's Sultanate builders.
Sense the royal past
Set it against the Jami Masjid nearby. One was built for a city, this one for a court, and the difference in scale is the point.
