TEMPLE · SHIVA · CARVEDVadnagar's carved Shiva masterpiece — Hatkeshwar Mahadev, a richly sculpted 17th-century temple of intricate stonework, the kuldevta shrine of the Nagar Brahmin community.
In the ancient town of Vadnagar stands Hatkeshwar Mahadev, one of Gujarat’s most beautifully carved Shiva temples and the revered kuldevta (family deity) shrine of the Nagar Brahmin community, who trace their origins to this town. Built in the 17th century on the site of a much older shrine, the temple is renowned for its extraordinarily intricate stone carving — its walls, pillars and toran archways covered in finely worked figures, deities, dancers, mythological scenes and decorative motifs, a late flowering of Gujarat’s temple-carving tradition.
At its heart is the Hatkeshwar lingam, worshipped as a self-manifested (swayambhu) form of Shiva. Atmospheric and richly detailed, the temple is a living place of worship that comes alive at Mahashivratri, and a highlight of any visit to Vadnagar for both pilgrims and admirers of stone craftsmanship. (An active temple; dress and behave respectfully.)
