ABOUT THE PLACE

A goddess crowning the hill

The Kalika Mata temple, crowning the summit of Pavagadh hill, is among the most revered Shakti shrines in Gujarat and the spiritual heart of the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO site. An ancient seat of goddess worship, it draws a constant stream of pilgrims who climb the long stone steps or take the ropeway to seek the blessing of the goddess Kali, especially during Navratri.

Recently renovated with a new shikhara and golden flag, the temple sits high above the plains, and uniquely shares its summit with the dargah of Sadanshah Pir, so that Hindu and Muslim sacred space meet at the very top. Devotion and dramatic setting in one. (A hilltop temple; modest dress; crowds at festivals.)
