ABOUT THE PLACE

The Shiva spring-temple of the forest

Gaumukh Mahadev is the principal pilgrimage temple of the Tapi forest country — a Shiva shrine in the wooded hills near Songadh, centred on a perennial spring that flows from a carved spout in the shape of a cow’s mouth (gaumukh) into a sacred kund (tank) before the temple.

The gaumukh — the cow’s-mouth spout from which sacred water flows — is a motif found at sacred springs across the Hindu world, most famously at the source of the Ganga in the Himalayas, and it carries deep associations of purity and the sacred origin of water. At Gaumukh in Tapi, the never-failing spring, the kund, the Shiva shrine and the surrounding forest together make a place of genuine natural and spiritual significance.

The temple draws pilgrims throughout the year, and especially during the holy month of Shravan and on Mahashivratri, when devotees come to bathe in the sacred kund and worship the Shivalinga. The forest setting — green, quiet, with the sound of the spring — gives the temple a peaceful, contemplative character. For the pilgrim and the visitor, Gaumukh Mahadev offers a forest temple experience of devotion and natural beauty.
