CITY · DISTRICT HQ · DAIRYThe bustling heart of north Gujarat — Mehsana, a busy district capital famed for its dairy and its location at the crossroads of the region's great heritage sites.
Mehsana (Mahesana) is the busy commercial heart of north Gujarat — a district headquarters and transport hub that, for most travellers, is the gateway to some of the state’s most remarkable heritage. Founded by tradition around the 14th century and named for its founder Mehsaji Chavda, the city today is a thriving market town and one of India’s great dairy centres, home to the famous Dudhsagar Dairy and the prized Mehsani buffalo.
While Mehsana itself is more workaday than touristy — with local temples, markets and the old Rajmahal — its real significance lies in what surrounds it. The dazzling Sun Temple at Modhera, the ancient town of Vadnagar, the Jain temples of Taranga, the Shakti shrine at Becharaji and the Umiya Mata temple at Unjha all lie within the district.
For the visitor, Mehsana is the practical, well-connected base from which north Gujarat’s heritage opens up. (A working city; the sights are mostly in the district around it.)
