— ABOUT THE DISTRICT

About Dang

The Dangs is Gujarat’s smallest and greenest district — a realm of forested hills, plunging waterfalls and proud tribal culture folded into the Sahyadri (Western Ghats). At its heart sits Saputara, the state’s only hill station, wrapped year-round in cool mist, pine and birdsong.

Beyond Saputara lie the roaring Gira and Girmal falls, the wild Purna and Mahal forests, and Shabari Dham — where legend says the devotee Shabari awaited Lord Rama. Every winter, the colourful Dang Darbar brings the region’s tribes together in song and dance.

1Visit in monsoon — Jul–Sep is when the waterfalls and hills are at their most spectacular.
2Carry warm layers — Saputara gets cool, especially on winter mornings and evenings.
3Book stays early — Saputara's limited hotels fill fast on weekends and festivals.
4Hire a local guide — For Mahal, Purna and remote falls, a guide is invaluable.
5Respect tribal culture — Ask before photographing villagers; buy crafts to support them.
6Drive carefully — Ghat roads are winding — start early and avoid night driving.
7Catch Dang Darbar — Time a winter visit for the colourful tribal festival before Holi.
8Pack rain gear — Monsoon trails are lush but slippery and very wet.
