TEMPLE · RATH YATRAA 450-year-old shrine to Lord Jagannath — and the start of Ahmedabad's vast, century-old Rath Yatra chariot procession.
In the Jamalpur quarter of the old city stands a temple that, for one day each year, becomes the centre of the entire city: the Jagannath Temple, home to Lord Jagannath with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. More than 450 years old, it is among the most important Jagannath shrines in India outside Puri itself.
Its fame is the Rath Yatra. Each year on Ashadhi Beej, three towering wooden chariots carrying the deities are pulled through the packed lanes of Ahmedabad by lakhs of devotees, accompanied by elephants, akharas and trucks of prasad — one of the largest such processions in the country.
For the rest of the year the temple is a calmer place of daily darshan, but the sense of devotion, and the great chariot sheds waiting in the courtyard, hint at the storm of faith that returns each monsoon.

The temple follows the familiar North-Indian form: a curved shikhara rising over the sanctum that houses Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, fronted by a pillared sabha mandap where devotees gather. Generations of additions have wrapped it in courtyards, subsidiary shrines and community halls.
Its most distinctive feature is functional: the large sheds and yards where the three towering Rath Yatra chariots are stored and rebuilt each year. For most of the year they stand quiet — a coiled spring of devotion waiting for Ashadhi Beej.
