HERITAGE · DAIRY · ANANDWhere a revolution was bottled — Amul Dairy in Anand, the co-operative that launched India's White Revolution and made Gujarat the world's largest milk producer, now with a fascinating museum.
Amul — the Anand Milk Union Limited — is arguably Gujarat’s most influential institution, a dairy co-operative founded in 1946 whose success in pooling the milk of small farmers into a great enterprise launched India’s White Revolution and turned the country from a milk importer to the world’s largest dairy producer.
Driven by the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and built by the co-operative genius of Tribhuvandas Patel and the management genius of Verghese Kurien, Amul became the model for the National Dairy Development Board and the entire Gujarat co-operative dairy network.
The dairy campus at Anand offers guided tours through its processing plant, and the adjacent museum tells the remarkable story of the White Revolution — a must-visit for anyone interested in rural development, food systems or modern India. (Tours on weekdays; book in advance.)
