CRAFT · WEAVING VILLAGEA village of weavers near Bhuj where Vankar artisans have spun and woven Kutchi shawls for generations — handloom heritage you can watch in motion.
Just outside Bhuj lies Bhujodi, one of Kutch’s most important textile villages and home to generations of Vankar (weaver) families. On pit looms set into courtyards and workshops, artisans weave the warm woollen shawls, stoles and blankets for which the region is famous, their geometric motifs and bright borders drawn from a vocabulary centuries old.
Around the weaving thrive Kutch’s other great textile arts — intricate hand embroidery, dazzling mirror-work and bandhani (tie-dye) — practised in the same lanes by neighbouring artisan communities.
Bhujodi is not a museum but a living, working village: you can watch the rhythm of the loom, see yarn being dyed and finished, and meet the makers who keep these skills alive. It is the perfect window into why Kutch is considered one of India’s great craft heartlands.

The rhythm of the pit loom.
Bhujodi’s weavers work mainly on pit looms — looms set partly into the ground, so the weaver sits with legs in a pit to work the treadles. Local wool (and increasingly cotton and blends) is spun, dyed and then woven into shawls, stoles and blankets, the bright supplementary-weft motifs added by hand as the cloth grows.
The patterns — geometric bands, dots and temple-like borders — carry meanings and lineages of their own, passed from parent to child. Around the weaving, the village’s embroiderers and bandhani (tie-dye) artists add Kutch’s other signature textile techniques, making Bhujodi a one-stop window onto the region’s craft.
