Porbandar’s other great spiritual landmark — and the source of its ancient name, Sudamapuri — is the Sudama Mandir, a rare temple dedicated not to a god but to a devotee: Sudama, the poor but pure-hearted Brahmin who was Krishna’s childhood friend.
Their story, in which Krishna lovingly repays Sudama’s humble gift of a handful of beaten rice (poha) with boundless prosperity, is one of Hinduism’s most beloved tales of friendship, humility and grace. The white temple, with its carved arches and shikhara, is unusually serene; a distinctive feature is a small labyrinth (maze) that pilgrims walk slowly as a meditative act.
Newly-wed couples traditionally visit to seek a bond as steadfast as that of Krishna and Sudama. Gentle and distinctive, it is the soul of Sudama’s own city.
The temple itself is early-twentieth-century work in white stone — carved arches, a graceful shikhara and a cool, unhurried courtyard that suits its subject. Half an hour covers it, and the pairing with Kirti Mandir a few streets away makes the natural morning: the devotee’s shrine and the Mahatma’s birthplace, Porbandar’s two claims on humility in one walk.
Sudama Mandir’s rarity is its dedication: temples to Krishna stand everywhere, but a temple to his poor devotee-friend exists almost nowhere else in India.
