ABOUT THE PLACE

Sacred river steps in the tribal forest

The Narmada river flows through the southern reaches of Chhota Udaipur district on its westward journey to the Arabian Sea, passing through the tribal forest landscape before reaching the plains of Bharuch and Narmada districts. In this tribal stretch, the Narmada ghats are simple — stepped stone banks, sometimes natural rock platforms, occasionally a small temple or shrine — but they carry the full sacred weight of the Narmada tradition.

The river in Hindu tradition is intrinsically pure: every pebble is a Shivalinga, the waters absolve sin, and the Narmada Parikrama (the pilgrimage circumambulation of the full river) is one of the most demanding and sacred journeys in the Hindu world. Pilgrims on Narmada Parikrama walk the riverbank, stopping at ghats to bathe and worship. In the tribal forest stretch, these pilgrims walk through Rathwa and Bhil territory, dependent on village hospitality, moving at the pace of the sacred landscape.

For the visitor, sitting by the Narmada in this stretch — watching the water move, the forest on the far bank, the occasional Parikrama pilgrim — is one of the most quietly powerful experiences that Chhota Udaipur offers. (No entry fee; Parikrama pilgrims present year-round; respectful behaviour required.)

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Sacred ghats in the tribal forest stretch

The Narmada ghats in the Chhota Udaipur tribal stretch are simple — stone steps, natural rock, a small shrine — but they are genuine tirthas on one of India’s most sacred rivers. The forest setting and the presence of Parikrama pilgrims give these ghats an atmosphere quite different from the more commercialised downstream ghats. (Respectful behaviour; shoes off at the ghat; Parikrama pilgrims present year-round.)

🌅

Best light

Come at dawn or dusk — low sun across the water and forest banks gives the most remarkable light.

🧱

What to shoot

The stone steps, the moving river, the far forest bank and the occasional Parikrama pilgrim.

🤫

Be respectful

Ask before photographing pilgrims at worship; keep the ghat calm and unstaged.

🎒
