TEMPLE · SWAMINARAYANA dazzling marble Swaminarayan temple in the heart of Bhuj — rebuilt grander than ever after the 2001 earthquake.
In the heart of Bhuj stands one of the six original temples founded by Bhagwan Swaminarayan himself, in 1822. For nearly two centuries it was the spiritual anchor of the city — until the catastrophic earthquake of 2001 reduced the old structure to rubble.
What rose in its place is breathtaking. A magnificent new temple, carved entirely from white marble and crowned with gold-leaf domes, was built nearby and consecrated in 2010. Every pillar, arch and ceiling is worked with intricate sculpture, and the gilded shikharas gleam over the old city — a powerful symbol of Kutch’s recovery and faith.
Busy with daily aartis and devotees, it is both a major NarNarayan Dev shrine and one of Bhuj’s most beautiful sights, an essential stop in the old city.

A 21st-century marble temple in classical style.
The new Swaminarayan temple is a tour de force of contemporary marble craftsmanship in classical Hindu temple style. Built entirely of white marble, it rises through richly carved pillars and arches to a cluster of shikharas finished in gold leaf, dazzling in the desert sun.
Ceilings, brackets and walls are covered in fine sculpture — deities, dancers, floral and geometric work — executed by master carvers. Replacing the quake-destroyed original, it stands as both a devotional centre and a statement of renewal for Bhuj.
