A short drive from Porbandar, the Mokarsagar (Mokar Sagar) wetland spreads across a broad complex of shallow lakes, creeks and marshes where freshwater meets the sea. In winter it becomes one of Saurashtra’s premier birding sites, hosting tens of thousands of waterbirds.
Great rafts of lesser and greater flamingos turn the shallows pink, joined by pelicans, cranes, storks, ducks, gulls and a host of migratory waders. The wetland is also important for the rare Indian skimmer and other threatened species, making it a magnet for birdwatchers and conservationists.
Flat, open and alive with wings, Mokarsagar is a wonderful and accessible wild experience right on Porbandar’s doorstep — and proof of how richly the region’s wetlands brim with life.

Mokarsagar is a broad wetland complex rather than a single lake — a patchwork of shallow freshwater spreads, tidal creeks and marshes near the Porbandar coast. That mingling of fresh and salt water, and the wide shallow flats, create ideal feeding grounds for flamingos and a great variety of waterbirds.
Flat and open, with bunds and tracks along the edges, it lets visitors scan huge numbers of birds across the water — a living, shifting spectacle that changes through the winter.
