NATURE · WETLAND · BIRDSA birdwatcher's paradise near Ahmedabad — Thol Lake, a shimmering wetland that draws flamingos, pelicans, cranes and tens of thousands of migratory birds each winter.
A short way from Ahmedabad on the edge of Mehsana district lies Thol Lake, one of Gujarat’s finest and most accessible birding spots. Originally created in the early 20th century as an irrigation reservoir, the shallow freshwater lake and its fringing marshes have become a designated bird sanctuary and a magnet for waterfowl.
In the winter months, when migratory birds arrive from across Asia, Thol comes alive: flamingos, pelicans, cranes — including the tall Sarus — storks, ducks, herons and dozens of other species gather in spectacular numbers, drawing photographers and nature lovers at dawn and dusk.
With its open water, reedbeds and birdsong, Thol offers a peaceful, rewarding escape into nature within easy reach of the city — best enjoyed in the soft light of early morning, binoculars in hand. (A protected sanctuary; observe quietly and don’t disturb the birds.)
