— ABOUT THE DISTRICT

About Junagadh

Junagadh — literally ‘old fort’ — is one of Gujarat’s most historic cities, sprawled at the foot of the sacred Girnar mountain in the Saurashtra region. Layers of dynasties left their mark: Mauryan rock edicts, a 2,300-year-old citadel, Buddhist caves and the fairy-tale domes of a 19th-century Nawabi mausoleum.

The city is the gateway to two natural treasures — the Girnar massif, a pilgrimage of nearly 10,000 steps sacred to Jains and Hindus alike, and the nearby Gir forest, the last home of the Asiatic lion. Sakkarbaug, India’s third-oldest zoo, was founded here in 1863.

From the Bhavnath fair at Maha Shivratri to the great Girnar Parikrama, Junagadh keeps its old rhythms alive — a place of forts and forests, faith and folklore.
