— ABOUT THE DISTRICT

About Chhota Udaipur

Chhota Udaipur is a vivid tribal district in eastern Gujarat, world-famous as the home of Pithora — the sacred ritual wall paintings of the Rathwa people, bursting with galloping horses, gods and scenes of village life. Painted onto the front walls of homes, they are living folk art at its most joyful.

The royal town centres on the elegant Kusum Vilas and Prem Bhavan palaces, while nearby Sankheda glows with its lacquered wooden furniture. Forested hills, the Narmada’s backwaters at Hafeshwar and the great Kawant tribal fair round out a deeply cultural corner of the state.
