ABOUT THE PLACE

A desert lake of birds

Where the Banni grasslands meet the desert of Kutch lies Chhari Dhand, a shallow, shape-shifting wetland that fills after the monsoon and slowly dries through the winter. In its brief watery months it becomes one of India’s finest birding sites — a Conservation Reserve where tens of thousands of birds gather under enormous skies.

Flamingos wade the shallows, common cranes trumpet over the reeds, and the area is famous among birders for its remarkable density of raptors — eagles, harriers, falcons and more — drawn to the grasslands’ rodents and small birds. Pelicans, ducks, storks and waders crowd the water, and over 200 species have been recorded here.

Remote, flat and vast, Chhari Dhand rewards patient visitors — ideally with a permit and a local guide — with one of Gujarat’s great, little-known wildlife spectacles.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Where grassland meets water

Chhari Dhand is a ‘dhand’ — a shallow, seasonal depression that holds rainwater. Set on the southern edge of the Banni grasslands, it has no permanent shoreline; its size and depth change through the year, expanding after the monsoon and contracting to mudflats by late winter.

That very impermanence is what makes it so rich: the shifting margins of water, reeds, mud and grassland create a mosaic of habitats that supports an exceptional variety and number of birds. It is protected as a Conservation Reserve, and is best experienced with a guide who knows where the water — and the birds — are on any given week.
