ABOUT THE PLACE

A treasury of mirror and gold

Tucked into the lanes of Jamnagar’s old city, around Chandi Bazaar, lies one of Gujarat’s most breathtaking concentrations of Jain art: a cluster of richly decorated Svetambar Jain temples (derasars). The best known are the Vardhman Shah and Raisi Shah temples, alongside the Shantinath and Adinath shrines.

Step inside and the effect is overwhelming — domes and walls sheathed in intricate mirror-work, gold leaf, coloured glass, marble inlay and delicate murals depicting Jain cosmology and the lives of the Tirthankaras. Built and embellished by wealthy Jain merchant families between roughly the 16th and 19th centuries, they are cool, hushed sanctuaries of astonishing craftsmanship.

Less famous than Gujarat’s grand pilgrimage tirthas, these temples are among the great hidden artistic treasures of Saurashtra — and a highlight of any walk through old Jamnagar.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Domes of mirror, walls of gold

The Jamnagar derasars are masterpieces of Svetambar Jain temple art. Beneath carved marble exteriors, their interiors are extravagantly worked: domed ceilings inlaid with tiny mirrors and coloured glass, columns and walls finished in gold leaf, and panels of fine mural painting depicting the Tirthankaras and the Jain cosmos.

Gathered close together in the old city, the temples form an ensemble — a concentrated display of the wealth, piety and refined taste of Jamnagar’s historic Jain merchant community.
